Learn to drive! School offering behind-the-wheel lessons [The Sun, Yuma, Ariz.]

Oct. 27--Yuma now has a driving school where teenagers -- and adults -- can receive both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving experience in preparation for receiving their permit and license.

Multiple packages are available from knowledgeable, patient and state licensed instructors. The school offers one-on-one comprehensive behind the wheel driving lessons in training vehicles that are equipped with dual brakes, dual mirrors and GPS units. Lessons cover basic maneuvers, parallel parking to advanced freeway and defensive driving skills. For their convenience, students are picked up and dropped off for their driving lessons.

Those who complete the program may be eligible for insurance discounts, Fell said.

-- As of Monday morning, Brown, Bench, Wright & McLeod, PC, will be open for business in the accounting firm's new Foothills office at 11487 S. Fortuna Road -- one block down the road from its former address.

The Foothills office is staffed five days a week by Paul McLeod, CPA. In addition, Kathy Bench, CPA, works in the office on Wednesdays. It will have the same phone number of 342-3003.

The firm also has an office in Yuma at 798 W. 28th St.

-- "Bringing new life to lost and forgotten treasures" is the motto for the newly opened Resurrect Resale, a resale/second hand store at 1929 S. Arizona Ave., Suite 2 in the Arizona Avenue Commercial Center (near Agua 2000).

Resurrect Resale is the partnership of three church friends who have come together to make surplus and estate sales a full time business. With a passion for art and vintage treasures, and after having good success selling in online formats, they have now opened a "brick and mortar" store to sell "a little of everything, from antiques and collectibles, household items, to new and used furniture."

Partners include Joseph Callahan, an abstract artist who has had an online collectibles and vintage sales business since 2001; Ian Nelson, who can fix almost anything electronic; and his wife, Karla Nelson, who serves as the administrative assistant and office manager.

Shop hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

-- Sheila Fitzgerald, a certified audiologist who has been serving the Yuma community for 26 years, is closing her practice of Audiology & Hearing Aid Associates, 2451 S. Avenue A in the Kachina Medical Plaza, effective the end of the month and is no longer taking new patients.

Fitzgerald opened her practice in 1987. For five years before that, she had worked for Yuma Ear, Nose and Throat. Previously she taught at St. Louis University and ran the audiology clinic at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. Her work has taken her from the Hines-Loyola Medical Center in Chicago to the Province of Ontario in Canada, where she was assigned to the Child Study Center at the Sir James Whitney.

"I'm more than grateful for all my wonderful patients," she said.

-- Desert Sand and Rock, LLC, a new decorative rock yard, will be opening its doors for business on Monday at 4563 E. 30th Place (one street north of 32nd Street between Avenues 4E and 5E). Along with decorative rock, the business provides flagstone, pavers, veneers and many other hardscape products.

The yard is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, and can be reached at 919-5766.

-- Encompass Preschool, a division of PPEP, is now open in Somerton at 115 N. Colombia Ave. to provide educational child care services to the community, announced director . DES certified, the preschool has capacity for 58 children ages 3 to 5.

-- A new catering business has been started by Fawn Williamson, who has more than 25 years experience in food service that includes the past 12 years as a culinary arts instructor for Yuma Union High School District and summer classes at Arizona Western College.

Joining her in Cornerstone Catering is Felipa Olivas, her former student and a recent AWC graduate. Another former student, Antonio Padilla, is the assistant manager and oversees the daily food production.

While able to cater to a wide range of events, Cornerstone Catering currently is focusing on corporate clientele who may need breakfast or lunch delivered to their business for office parties, staff meetings or training sessions and prefer a deli tray or sandwich platter -- featuring fresh-made sauces and dressings.

A minimum of two hours notice is required for that day's delivery, with most customers placing orders one day for the next day's delivery. All products are delivered to the customer's business.

This allows the business to receive messages through their computer even if they are busy in the kitchen and aren't able to pick up the phone.
