Whether you're shopping for your first policy or looking for lower rates, consider these ways to trim costs without sacrificing coverage.
Before you buy, be sure to:
*Scout the location. Living in a safer area, such as one with a quality fire department, can mean you'll pay less for insurance.
*Check the construction. Building materials can impact your safety and insurance costs.
* Be aware of age. Classic homes may be charming, but they could be dangerously outdated. Ask whether upgrades or prior work has brought the home up to current building codes.
*Shop around. Compare insurance companies' coverage and benefits side-by- side to get a great deal.
When you already own:
*Raise your deductible. The more you are willing to pay out-of-pocket, the less you'll pay in premiums.
*Score points for safety. Making upgrades to your home, such as smoke detectors and deadbolts, could protect you from harm and earn a discount.
*Be high maintenance. Maintaining the general safety and condition of your home, such as cleaning the furnace and replacing gutters, can help you prevent loss and save money.
*Get a package deal. Qualify for a discount by purchasing multiple insurance products from the same provider.
*Make sure your policy covers the complete cost to rebuild your home, including any additions or improvements you've made since you bought the house.
