Jorden Williams leads Sewanee basketball team to overtime win

Feb. 03----The Sewanee basketball teams split in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday at Hendrix in Conway, Ark., with the women falling 69-48 while the men picked up a 77-71 overtime win. Casey Hassett scored 12 points off the bench to lead the Sewanee women, and Jamie Chauvin and Paige Lowe each scored 10 in the loss. In the men's game, freshman and former McCallie School standout Jorden Williams shot 80 percent from the floor and scored a career-high 25 points. Keshonn Carter scored 14, and Leo Born added 10 points.

--Tennessee Temple split a late-night basketball doubleheader Saturday at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., the Crusaders rising to 13-9 with a 64-62 win after the Lady Crusaders fell to 10-11 with a 65-60 loss.

Baseball

Lee University completed a season-opening weekend baseball sweep of Emmanuel with a 3-1 victory Sunday as Derrick Pitts had two hits, scored twice and picked up the save in the win. The game was scoreless through the top of the sixth inning when Lee scored in the bottom of the frame. Emmanuel College tied the game in the top of the seventh, but the Flames scored in the bottom of the seventh retake the lead and in the eighth to add some insurance. Dustin Lawson started and pitched five scoreless innings, but came away with no decision. Carlos Ditren earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of relief, and Pitts threw a perfect eighth to pick up his first save of the season.

--Tennessee Wesleyan lost its first two baseball games of 2014 Saturday at Auburn-Montgomery, 5-3 and 6-4, and lost 11-8 in the series finale Sunday. Saturday, Cody Heifnar was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a double in the first game for TWC, ranked eighth in the NAIA preseason poll, and Tim Kiene hit a two-run home run and James Boddicker was 2-for-4 in the second loss. Sunday, the Bulldogs had a 6-3 lead after two innings and lead 8-3 in the top of the fifth, but AUM scored three in the bottom of the fifth and five in the seventh to get the win. Branden Walker lead TWC on offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Boddicker had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Kiene knocked in two runs.

--Cleveland State split two junior college baseball games Sunday at Georgia Highlands. The Cougars (3-1) won the first game 9-3 and lost the second game 8-7. Cameron Strickland, Keith Buckhault and Janson Roberson each scored twice in the first game, as Cleveland State pounded out 12 hits, and Josh Morgan picked up the pitching win. Strickland also had two hits in the second game, but the Cougars only had six hits and couldn't hold the lead on two occasions.

Softball

Lee University opened the 2014 season witha 2-0 win over Tusculum on Sunday in Savannah, Ga., with Angie Hughes pitching a complete-game no-hitter with 15 strikeouts for the win. Ana Coscorrosa knocked in both runs, and she and Lizzie Stevens each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Tennis

--The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team improved to 3-0 for the season with a 7-0 victory Sunday against Evansville at McCallie School. UTC opened strong by sweeping all three doubles matches for the third time in three matches this season. Kaylene Chadwell, Kayla Jones, Kelsey Coots, Alexa Flynn and Claire Mulyadi all picked up wins in doubles and singles play.

--The UTC men's tennis team lost 4-3 to Austin Peay in a 5 1/2-hour match Saturday at Clarksville, Tenn., that included five three-set singles matches. The Mocs took the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at No. 1 by Jorge Varon and John Peacey and a 6-3 win by Pavels Grigorjevs and Gino Delavalle, and Delavalle and Peacey won in singles. Peacey's victory at No. 5 evened the team score at 3 and left the outcome in the hands of freshman Austin Boaz, who led 5-4 in the third set but lost in a tiebreaker to Evan Borowski.

Running

--Red Bank track coach Hugh Enicks of Signal Mountain finished fourth in the men's 50-54 age group and 10th overall Sunday morning at the USA Track and Field Masters Half Marathon in Melbourne, Fla. Runners as young as 40 participated. Enicks' time was 1 hour, 19 minutes, 14 seconds in 80-plus temperatures on a course that included climbs of two causeways.

Track & Field

--UTC's men's distance medley relay teams finished second and fifth at the Tennessee State Invitational indoor track meet Saturday in Nashville. The Mocs' A team of Harry Smithers, Marquis Carter, Trevor Janssen and Nathan Wanuch finished in 10 minutes, 27.60 seconds. The B group of Mark Cole, DeQuantez Sandifer, Matthew Marshall and Patrick O'Brien led the A guys through the first two legs and finished in 10:39.51. UTC's James Stovall was 10th in his first collegiate triple jump, and Iman Isang was 11th in the 55-meter hurdles.

Swimming/Diving

--NCAA Division III's No. 1-ranked and three-time defending national champion Emory University women's swimming and diving team beat Sewanee 137-84 on Saturday in Atlanta, and the third-ranked Emory men won 115-79, but the visiting Tigers had several individual highlights. Sewanee'sFrazier Delany and Winston Westbrook were first and second in men's 3-meter diving and Courtney Moore, Devany and David Evans took the top three spots from the 1-meter board. Brian Glatt and William Ralston were one-two in the 100-yard freestyle, and Jackson Cromer and Patrick Stone were one-two in the 100 backstroke. For the Sewanee women, Caty Hueske and Parker Goss were first and second in the 100 free, Erin Neil won the 500 free with Amy Lee second, Mallory Graves won the 100 back with Emily Gay second and Astrid Escobar was second in the 100 breaststroke.
