Inmate smuggles pot into jail

March 09--Do marijuana smokers ever wonder where their pot has been? For those incarcerated at South Western Regional Jail, it could have been smuggled in the jail by the seat of an inmate's pants, literally.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the West Virginia State Police on December 30, 2013, they were notified by authorities at Southwestern Regional Jail that an inmate, Jeremy White, 29, of Madison, had a balloon containing a leafy green substance, believed to be marijuana, in his possession.

According to the correctional officer at SWRJ, White allegedly admitted that he had the balloon in his anus and had obtained it during a medical leave from the jail.

White was charged with aiding escape and other offenses relating to adults and juveniles. His bail was set at $1,000.

-- On March 5, a West Virginia State Trooper responded to a call concerning a possible domestic dispute in a moving vehicle.

Upon arriving, officers ordered the driver, Jason Eric Nelson, to place his hands behind his back for handcuffing for the officer's safety. Nelson allegedly refused to comply and attempted to turn around to confront the officer. The officer states that he was able to handcuff Nelson and perform a safety pat down with further incidence.

The officer then spoke with Nelson, and the passenger, Jessica Lynn Vance, concerning the incident. The officer determined that the couple was lying about what had occurred prior to the traffic stop and determined that the incident was not domestic in nature.

The officer allegedly observed a pipe used for smoking marijuana laying openly in the vehicle and numerous seeds, believed to be marijuana seeds, in the ash tray of the vehicle.

Nelson, 35, of Dingess, was booked for possession of marijuana less than 15 grams, obstructing and giving false information to the officer. His bail was set at $2,500.

Vance, however, reportedly did not take respond to officers orders, as the officer states that she continually attempted to slide her handcuffs to the front and ignored several verbal orders by the officer to stop during transport. Upon arrival for processing, she allegedly became very aggressive and continually screamed and cursed the officer and kicked a trash can across the room.

Vance, 29, of Henlawson, was booked for giving false information to the officer, possession of marijuana less than 15 grams, and obstructing. Her bail was set at $2,500.

-- A Columbia Station, Ohio, man was arrested on March 6 on a fugitive from justice warrant by WVSP. While serving the warrant, officers were allegedly advised by Torry A. Butler, 21, that he had a pipe in his pocket. The pipe appeared to have marijuana residue in it and smelled of burned marijuana.

Officers also reportedly located a marijuana cigarette and a suboxone patch in Butler's bedroom. Butler could not provide a prescription for the suboxone.

Along with the fugitive from justice charge, Butler was charged with possession of a controlled substance, less than 15 grams and possession of a controlled substance. His bail for the fugitive charge is $50,000 and $2,500 for the drug charges.

In other magistrate court news:

-- Malcolm Ray Meade, 25, was booked on Feb. 23 by the WVSP for possession of a controlled substance less than 15 grams and possession of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $5,000.

-- Richard Allen Newsome, 49, was booked on Feb. 25 by the WVSP for no turn signal, no insurance, DUI (1st offense) and driving on revoked license non DUI. His bail was set at $3,000.

-- Ralph Curtis Cooper, 32, was booked on Feb. 26 by the WVSP for driver's license revoked for DUI and parking in a fire lane. His bail was set at $1,500.

-- Stacy Dawn Stollings, 42, was booked on Feb. 27 by the LCSD for DUI (1st offense) and left of center. Her bail was set at $2,500.

-- Margaret Michelle Thomas, 29, was booked on Feb. 27 by the Logan Police Department with two counts of shoplifting 2nd offense. Her bail was set at $2,500.

-- Shawn Daniel Sharratt, 43, was booked on Feb. 28 by the WVSP for failure to obtain W.Va. registration, improper/expired registration, speeding, no insurance and driver's license revoked for DUI. His bail was set at $4,000.

-- Corey Blaine Gumm, 19, was booked on Feb. 28 by the WVSP for reckless driving, no seat belt, simple possession of marijuana and giving false information. His bail was set at $5,000.

-- Jonathan Blake Justice, 28, was booked on March 1 by the Logan County Sheriff's Deputies for receiving/transferring stolen property greater than $1,000. His bail was set at $5,000.
