IU Named as a 2010 Best Place to Work in IT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., June 21 -- Indiana University issued the following news release:

Indiana University was recognized today (June 21) by Computerworld magazine as one of the Best Places to Work in IT. This adds a human-centric distinction to IU's long list of honors in information technology (IT), which include numerous awards for advanced networks, software, and services.

IU and WellPoint are the only Indiana IT employers to rank in the top 100, and IU is one of only six higher education institutions on the list, featured alongside a prestigious lineup of corporations ranging from Aflac to Xerox.

"IU is delighted to be recognized as one of the best places in the nation for IT professionals," said IU Vice President for IT and CIO Brad Wheeler. "This distinction is for all of the IT staff across all campuses, schools, and the excellent staff in University Information Technology Services (UITS). It demonstrates the growth of great IT jobs in Indiana with more coming from IU's gains in research grants and many IT collaborations."

Computerworld's annual "Best Places to Work in IT" feature has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals since 1994. The rankings are based on comprehensive questionnaires about offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training, and retention. Extensive responses from each organization's IT workers also factor heavily in determining the rankings.

"To be among the Best Places to Work in IT, it's not enough to seek out and hire the most talented IT people, offering competitive pay and benefits," noted Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld. "The organizations that made this year's list sustain a dynamic work environment in which IT professionals keep their hands on the latest technologies and work on projects that are business critical."

Being designated as one of the Best Places to Work in IT echoes the vision and aspirations of Empowering People, IU's strategic plan for information technology, and underscores IU's foundational belief in enabling its people to gain the confidence and abilities to reach the highest levels of excellence and leadership.

"This is a tremendous honor for Indiana University's IT team," said Debby Allmayer, human resources officer for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology. "It highlights the people behind IU's many IT achievements, publicly recognizing our shared commitment to the university's teaching, research, and service missions."

As Beth Van Gordon, CIO of Indiana University Northwest and Indiana University Kokomo, put it: "During my 35-plus years with IU, I've worked within many branches of the university's IT family, on both core and regional campuses. There is so much that goes into IU's being a Best Place to Work in IT -- setting strategic goals, anticipating trends, and, above all, engaging and championing the IT innovators that make it all possible."

This recognition by Computerworld reinforces the idea that IU benefits from a unique worldview: There are no divisions within the university's IT team. Despite different locations and reporting structures, everyone is working toward a common set of goals and an uncommon vision. "We truly work across the university as one IU IT team to accomplish great things," added Allmayer.

"In my 20 years of working with various schools and departments within IU, I have seen IT's quality leadership and motivated staff maintain a consistent level of excellence across all IU campuses and to IU's numerous colleagues," stated Carl Rhine, manager of IT for HELPnet Technology Services at IUPUI. "This recognition truly acknowledges that excellence."
