High school honors

June 23--Winegard Co. has announced the recipients of the Winegard STEM Scholarship Awards.

The program is designed for students from Des Moines County enrolled in a science, technology, engineering or math program at Southeastern Community College, University of Iowa or Iowa State University. The 2014 recipients are:

--Harrison White, a graduate of Burlington High School, who plans to attend the University of Iowa and major in electrical engineering and computer engineering.

--Javier Garcia, a graduate of Burlington High School, who plans to attend the University of Iowa and major in mechanical engineering.

--Keven Chng, a graduate of West Burlington High School, who plans to attend Iowa State University and major in engineering.

--Christopher Martinez, a graduate of Burlington High School, who plans to attend Iowa State University and will major in engineering.

FORT MADISON -- Throughout the spring, the Fort Madison School District participated in a penny drive to raise money for the United Way. Altogether, the schools collected $1,277.30.

At Lincoln Elementary School, $472.70 was raised, with $64.78 coming from Mrs. Martin's kindergarten class. Mrs. Boeding's first-grade class raised $58.73 at Richardson Elementary School, whose total was $387.72.

The Fort Madison Middle School raised $416.88, with Mrs. Santiago's fourth-graders contributing $106.97.

Casey's donated pizzas for a party for each class raising the most money at each school. At each pizza party, United Way Director Sarah Crabtree and summer intern Emily Tinguely spoke about the United Way mission and how they can support the United Way by giving, advocating and volunteering.

The students shared their own stories of volunteerism.

Each year the penny drive helps support the United Way's efforts in the areas of income, education, and health.

WAPELLO -- Kimberlee Ewart and Bay Boysen have received $500 from Louisa County Master Gardeners. The scholarships are for Louisa County residents pursing a horticulture degree at either a community college or a four-year college.

DONNELLSON -- Cassie D. Krebill, a Central Lee High School graduate, was awarded a conservation scholarship by the Lee Soil and Water Conservation District commissioners May 13 at the school's annual senior awards program. She also was one of eight Iowa senior high school students to receive the 2014 Outstanding Science Student Award from the Iowa Academy of Science.

WINFIELD -- Erica Robison of Winfield has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Alliant Energy Foundation.

FORT MADISON -- Students in Holy Trinity's National Honor Society have completed their service projects for 2013-14. In April, the students promoted awareness for two organizations, the Hope Lodge in Iowa City and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The HTC National Honor Society, with the support of HTC students, raised money by selling Cystic Fibrosis Little People pin-ups.

By the end of the campaign, a colorful display was created on HTC's front windows and $650 was donated to the CF Foundation.

A matching contribution from the NHS, $275 was sent to the American Cancer Society'sHope Lodge in Iowa City.

Members are Maria Vonderhaar, Katherine Schierbrock, Rachel Ferguson, Jamie Sobczak, Angela Bentler, Lauren Pothitakis, Paige Hansen, Jena Vonderhaar, Alisha Saathoff, Sabrina Menke. Zach Taylor, Ben Votroubek, Nick Krone, Adam Stewart, Dylan Menke, Chris Schierbrock, Blake Hellweg, Mikaela Foecke, Luke Fullenkamp, Bryce Walljasper, Tyler Delaney, Cayla Pieper, Nicole Wilkens, Meggie Meyer and Kristen Tinguely.

FORT MADISON -- Fort Madison Community Hospital Auxiliary selected four recipients for its 2014 scholarship awards:

--Jessica Wolken, Central Lee High School. She will attend Simpson College and major in athletic training.

--Emma Schau, Central Lee High School. She will attend University of Iowa and major in diagnostic medical sonography.

--Abigail Barnett, Central Lee High School. She will attend Southeastern Community College and major in nursing.

--Lindsey Vandenberg attends Creighton University, majoring in physical therapy.

FORT MADISON -- The Kathleen Canella Family, in conjunction with the Fort Madison Community Hospital Foundation, awarded nine Kathleen Canella Family Scholarships to area students.

The scholarship provides money to students pursuing careers in a medical field and is awarded to high school seniors or recent high school graduates from either Fort Madison or Holy Trinity Catholic high schools. The scholarships also are available to non-traditional college students. Recipients were chosen based on grades, leadership, character, community activity and financial need.

The 2014 recipients are:

--Kole Cooper, FMHS, who will attend South Dakota State University.

--Lindsay Vandenberg, who attends Creighton University, studying to be a physical therapist.

--Amber Harrington, who attends Southeastern Community College, majoring in nursing.

--Shelby Green, who attends Kirkwood Community College, studying to be an occupational therapy assistant.

--Lia Grogan, attending Des Moines University, studying to be a physician assistant.

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Keaton Hoschek of Burlington, Danielle Williams of Danville and Molly Woodruff of Mediapolis have been awarded $1,000 college scholarships from the Eastern Iowa Light and Power Cooperative. Lee Harris of Morning Sun was awarded a $500 college scholarship from the cooperative.

BIGGSVILLE -- West Central High School senior Catherine Steck of Carman, Ill., received a 2014 Road to Success Scholarship for $1,000 from Thompson Insurance Co. of Raritan, Ill., with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. of Grinnell.

DONNELLSON -- Eight Central Lee FFA members were awarded a $1,000 scholarship, given in the memory of Levi Gundy, a former Central Lee FFA member and Marine. Members are recognized for their leadership, supervised agricultural projects and scholarship.

The scholarship is supported by the Levi Gundy family and an annual benefit auction. Recipients were Reed Shockley, Cassie Krebill, Gabe Halstead, Molly Westermeyer, Austin Moore, Luis Galle, Jason Ridgway and Ellen Morris.

The winners were announced at the school's annual annual parent-member-community appreciation banquet.

Also at the banquet, Rick Galle, Sarah Tweedy and Jacob Wolken received the "Star" Greenhand degree for first-year FFA members who demonstrated leadership, goal-setting with supervised projects, and scholarship.

2014-15 FFA officers were installed at the banquet. They were Andrew Lambert, president; Jacob Boeck, vice president; Ethan Hellweg, second vice president; Josey Kirchner, third vice president; Emma Newberry, secretary; Caleb Moore, treasurer; Rick Galle, reporter; and Weston Ensminger, sentinel.

WAPELLO -- Elijah Sents of Columbus Junction received $2,500 for being the second-place winner of the Conservation Districts of Iowa Scholarship. He represented the Louisa County Soil and Water Conservation District.

DONNELLSON -- Maia Ehrgott-Jenkins, 15, and a sophomore at Keokuk Senior High School, was awarded a certificate of honorable mention from the National Association of Conservation Districts for her 2013 poster contest entry submitted to the Lee Soil and Water Conservation District last spring.

The 2013 contest theme, "Where Does Your Water Shed?" allowed students to explore the topic of clean water and use their artistic ability to explain the concept of a watershed.

Ehrgott-Jenkins' poster won top honors in the local Lee SWCD contest and her poster advanced last spring to win at the state Conservation Districts of Iowa competition in Des Moines.

Her poster advanced to the national contest, where she received the honorable mention award from the National Association of Conservation Districts, and was displayed in February at the NACD National Convention in Anaheim, Calif.

DONNELLSON -- Three teams from Central Lee Middle School competed in the Great Prairie AEA Sixth Grade Math BeeApril 8 in Fairfield.

Students were Adam Boeck, Vanessa Hupp, Abbi Johnson, Luke Simmons, Sara Branson, Jake Lamartine, Charlie Teggatz, Sophie Woodley, Andrea Benner, Elizabeth Steffensmeier, and John Underwood.

Fifty-two teams of more than 200 students participated in the event. Vanessa Hupp won third place as an individual. Kathy Van Winkle was the coach.
