Governor Jan Brewer Appoints Maricopa County Superior Court Judge

PHOENIX, July 30 -- Gov. Jan Brewer, D-Ariz., issued the following news release:

Governor Jan Brewer today appointed Lori Horn Bustamante to the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Since 2011, Ms. Bustamante has been a Commissioner for the Maricopa County Superior Court presiding over conservatorships, guardianships, mental health matters, and personal representative appointments for decedent estates. She currently handles approximately 35 to 70 cases per week. Previously, her career included being a sole practitioner with the Law Office of Lori Horn (2006-2011) ; a trial attorney with All state Insurance Company (2001-2006); and a Deputy County Attorney with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office (1997-2001).

"Lori has a successful and well-rounded background in civil and criminal law, having served in private practice and as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney," said Governor Brewer. "In addition, she has judicial experience as a commissioner, for which she has received stellar judicial performance scores. I am confident Lori has a genuine respect for separation of powers and will continue to serve with distinction and promote the rule of law as a Maricopa County Superior Court judge."

Commissioner Bustamante was a co-senior editor of the 2014 Arizona Probate Code Practice Manual. She also is the judicial liaison for the Arizona State Bar Probate and Trust Section Executive Council, and has worked to draft the Judicial College of Arizona Probate Bench Book. In the past, Commissioner Bustamante has volunteered as a judicial officer on National Adoption Day and with Veterans Stand Down.

Commissioner Bustamante and her family are involved in church and community activities. She has taught several Bible study classes and participates in shoe drives, clothing drives and food drives for underprivileged adults and children. She also is actively involved as a "dance mom" and '"football mom" through her children's activities.

Commissioner Bustamante obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, in History and Justice Studies from Grand Canyon University (1994). She graduated cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law (1996). She has been appointed by Governor Brewer to replace outgoing Judge Harriet Chavez.
