Glenn, Pitts restart Hire an Adult Program

June 20--LIMA -- Two local men recently rekindled an old program that helped local people find jobs and are seeing immediate results.

Former Lima councilman Tommy Pitts and Sixth Ward Councilman Derry Glenn are putting new efforts into the Hire an Adult Program, and have already helped 10 local people find jobs in the first month.

The program originally formed in 2009 but had fell defunct until Pitts and Glenn teamed up to get it restarted.

"There are a lot of people who need jobs, and they need the medical insurance," Glenn said. "A lot of people don't know where the jobs are at. Others might need help filling out applications or finding out where the jobs are at. This what we are trying to help with."

Glenn said they plan to open a business office on June 26 at 521 Catalpa St. to further help people find jobs in the area. Glenn said they have already helped people land jobs at General Aluminum and some other plants out-of-town. He said they also plan to meet with officials at other local plants such as Ford, Dana Potash and Husky Lima Refinery to further broaden the potential employer base for their clients.

"We have a lot of folks calling that are interested in finding work," Glenn said. "Our goal is to keep people here in Lima. A lot of people leave because they don't know that there are jobs available. We want to keep good people right here in Lima."

Glenn said the group has primarily focused on finding manufacturing plant jobs for job-seekers, but that they are also looking into other potential employment opportunities as well.

"We aren't looking for temporary positions," Glenn said. "We are looking for good-paying jobs for these people that have some benefits along with them. We want them to be able to put food on their tables and raise their families. We want them to be able to buy a baseball glove if they have kids that want to play sports in school."

Glenn said that the goal is to average finding 30 people a job every month. He said he has 100 clients right now that he could link with employers that are looking for good employees.

"We want to have the program continue to grow every month," Glenn said.
