Free tax help to begin Monday at H. Odell Weeks Activity Center

Jan. 31--The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will begin Monday at the H. Odell Weeks Activity Center at 1700 Whiskey Road.

The service is for people with low to moderate incomes. Restrictions apply on some types of income.

Volunteers who provide the service are certified and supervised by the IRS and will be available to assist with taxes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week during February. Volunteers will be available Monday and Tuesday of each week during March and April.

Assistance for people who require paper returns will be available only on April 13 and 14. The last day taxes will be prepared is April 14.

To have a return prepared, a person will need:

--a picture ID (bring spouse if filing a joint return)

--Social Security</org> cards of the person having the return prepared, spouse and all children

--W-2 for every job worked in 2014

--1099 for all bank interest, dividends, Social Security, pensions, annuities, IRA distributions and stock sales

--last year's tax return

--any other relevant information.

This year, for the first time, people must bring documents about health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, including Form 1095-A, as applicable.

Returns will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Supporters of the program are the city of Aiken, United Way of Aiken County, ACTS, SRP Federal Credit Union, Security Federal Bank and First Citizens Bank.
