Medicaid in Mississippi
Concerns have arisen regarding recent government actions and their effects on Medicaid. Brown describes Medicaid as a "forever-changing system."
Individuals in
"Those are the types of things that are changing. But what I would say that's not changing is communication," Brown said. "We are always open to communicating."
Brown emphasizes the importance of communication not just from Medicaid, but also from individuals themselves. It is crucial that any changes in addresses or personal circumstances are reported to Medicaid immediately to ensure continuity of services. Many members may not fully understand their specific programs and benefits, which can lead to complications. Various programs exist for specific groups, including pregnant women, children, and those requiring home-based services. Asking questions and seeking information about different coverages and benefits is essential.
While Brown cannot personally assist everyone, she encourages individuals to visit their local offices to determine their eligibility. Many seniors hesitate to apply for Medicaid due to misconceptions about their eligibility, but numerous cases show that people can qualify for assistance. Nursing home benefits are available but can only be applied for once an individual is residing in a nursing home. Pregnant mothers can ensure that their babies are automatically covered for a year after birth, and extended Medicaid coverage is offered to mothers for a year postpartum. Additionally, disabled children are able to receive care at home rather than in residential facilities through the Katie Beckett program.
"People can just go and apply and find out that you're eligible to be helped," Brown said. " There's a big initiative right now…go to the local office and apply for Medicaid to see if you're eligible."
