Cybersecurity Takes Center Stage at SC Congress New York

PR Web

NEW YORK (PRWEB) September 03, 2014

SC Congress New York, the premier cybersecurity event produced by SC Magazine, has announced its annual conference and expo in New York. SC Congress New York will be held at The Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan on October 21, 2014.

Hacktivists, state-sponsored cyberattacks and supply chain vulnerabilities all play major roles in increasing security risk for organizations. At SC Congress New York, top security experts will unite to present actionable solutions for burning cybersecurity issues including: how to move beyond the threat of the hour to stay ahead of tomorrow's emerging threats; supply chain security and protecting against vulnerabilities built in to enterprise technology; weighing the value of cyber insurance; and how to find qualified individuals for hard-to-fill IT security positions. Attendees will leave with practical, real-world solutions to help strengthen their organizations' risk management positions and tighten critical security controls.

"This year, we have a unique opportunity at SC Congress New York to see live demos of the latest exploits being used in cyberattacks today and learn how to stay ahead of threats in the immediate future," said Illena Armstrong, VP of Editorial at SC Magazine. "Top security experts from the public and private sectors will be here to share their deep knowledge on all aspects of cybersecurity. This conference promises to be a great experience for attendees and will send them home with the knowledge and skills needed for securing their organizations."

The 2014 SC Congress New York keynote sessions include:

Securing Finance - A continued uphill battle – John J. Masserini, CSO, The MIAX Options Exchange; Daniel Conroy, CISO, GE Capital Retail Finance; Moriah Lazar Hara, SVP enterprise information security, Wells Fargo
From breaches to Heartbleed to bank fraud and of course to hacktivists and state sponsored actors - the financial vertical is no easy job for a security professional. How does one stay ahead of the threats, or even keep up? Although focused on the financial sector, lessons learned from this keynote session can apply to any vertical, regulated or not.

Other Highly Anticipated Sessions Include:

Tomorrow's Threat
Rather than focus on the latest "threat of the hour," this session will help IT security professionals focus on what is likely to come, in order to stay ahead of tomorrow's emerging threats. This panel of experts will share what concerns them right now and what they are preparing for, so attendees can also prepare.

   •  Glenn Watt, VP, information security and data privacy, Medidata Solutions
   •  Lisa McLaughlin, CISO and VP of security, SS&C Technologies Inc. Supply Chain Security - It's a Brave New World
Supply chain security issues and the risk of vulnerabilities in hardware and software have morphed in recent years. Make no mistake, a security professional's eye still needs to be on foreign entities producing key elements of our products, but recent information suggests that our own government, along with once-trusted technology vendors, are also putting a chink in the armor. Even if the concern is not of the government and what they do with the data - if those backdoors exist, others can use them. How does a security professional deal with these vulnerabilities?

   •  Judith H. Germano, founding member, Germano Law LLC, and senior fellow, NYU School of Law, Center on Law & Security
   •  Edna M. Conway, CSO, global supply chain, Cisco
   •  Darren Van Booven, CISO, U.S. House of Representatives Cyber Insurance - If you can't beat them, insure against them
Last year, the U.S. insurance industry produced $1 billion in policies covering cyber attacks. By the end of 2014, the figure is expected to reach $2 billion. Clearly organizations and security professionals are viewing such insurance as another risk mitigation strategy. What are the pros and cons of going this route? How much is enough? Is this smart business, or a way to avoid solving the problem itself?

   •  Zouhair Guelzim, VP and CISO, L'Oréal USA
   •  Admiral Jamie Barnett (Ret.), partner, Venable LLP Hiring the Unhireable vs. STEM Education
Current hiring policies for IT are typically antiquated, capricious and the wrong people are making decisions that can hurt an organization's security efforts. At the same time, filling security positions with the right people is getting harder. Regardless of the industry, it is increasingly difficult to find highly qualified individuals without stealing them from other organizations. Do IT security professionals need to broaden our scope of who we look at for such positions? Or is the answer an increased emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the classroom? Security professionals and their organizations can and should play an important role in this decision.

   •  Winn Schwartau, author & security visionary, The Security Awareness Company
   •  Robert Clark, cyber law (attorney), Army Cyber Institute, United States Military Academy

Additional speakers and session information will be made available in the coming weeks, including two highly anticipated keynote sessions--these sessions will be a must-attend for anyone interested in cybersecurity.
