The 130th Annual Convention travels to Colorado Springs

Texas bankers will travel to the historic Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs for the 130th Annual Convention, May 7-9. Built in 1918 and nicknamed the "Grand Dame of the Rockies," The Broadmoor is patterned after Europe's finest hostelries.

Its location, near the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains, makes it the perfect venue to enjoy nearby sites such as Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods red rock formations, Native American cliff dwellings, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the charming towns of Manitou Springs and Colorado City.

The Convention program includes several nationally recognized speakers, including keynote speaker Erskine Bowles, the former Clinton administration chief of staff and outspoken advocate for reducing the federal deficit. Bowles, who was recently named lead director of the board of Morgan Stanley, is a founder of Fix the Debt, a debt reduction campaign that has advocated for cuts to social safety net programs and tax code changes that benefit corporations.

Joining Bowles on the program are speakers who will discuss the globalization of cyber crime, bank branding, mergers and acquisitions, patent trolls, leadership and current legislation. The program includes three concurrent breakout sessions on day one and a regulatory panel on day two.

Speakers include:

Dan Coughlin, a management consultant to a wide variety of industries whose focus is on leadership, sales innovation and branding.

Dr. James A. Crupi, president and founder of Strategic Leadership Solutions Inc. and an authority in international business, future trends and leadership development.

Gov. Frank Keating, president and CEO of the American Bankers Association and former governor of Oklahoma.

Steven Bullitt, assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, North Texas Electronics Crimes Task Force.

Jeff Shaffer, senior special agent with the U.S. Secret Service.

Breakout speakers include:

Dory Wiley, president and CEO of Commerce Street Holdings, who will show shareholders how to balance board duties with demands and interests of different investors.

Craig McMahen, managing director for Keefe, Bruyette and Woods, who will discuss the reasons behind the increase in bank M&A activity.

Aziz Burgy, a registered patent attorney, who will review practical strategies and considerations for dealing with patent troll demand letters.

The Regulatory Panel is comprised of Charles Cooper, Texas Department of Banking; Gil Barker, OCC; Ann Worthy, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; Kristie Elmquist, FDIC; and Doug Foster, Texas Department of Savings and Mortgage Lending.

Networking opportunities

While the convention program includes hot topics that bankers won't want to miss, one of the primary reasons to attend convention is the networking opportunities, including breakfasts and receptions in the Marketplace, a golf tournament and optional tours of the Olympic Training Center and Royal Gorge Route Railway.

Marketplace Preview Reception

Wednesday, May 7, 4 to 6 p.m.

Attendees can pick up their registration materials Wednesday afternoon and get a sneak peak of the Marketplace, with more than 100 exhibit booths. We've brought back the "ScanVenger Hunt," which gives bankers the opportunity to answer exhibitors' questions correctly for a chance to win $200 every 30 minutes while the Marketplace is open.

TIB's Toast to Texas

Wednesday, May 7, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Although we'll be in Colorado, no Convention is complete without a toast to the Lone Star State. There will be plenty of food, refreshments and opportunities for conversation.

BankPac Live Auction

Friday, May 9, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

We've brought back our favorite auctioneer, past TBA Chairman Wes Hoskins, to raise funds for TBA BankPac. The live auction will include some special items, so keep an eye out for the 2014 Live Auction guide.

Cornerstone & Life Awards Luncheon

Thursday, May 8,12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Ten banks will be honored with Cornerstone and LiFE Awards in honor of their community involvement and financial literacy projects.

Listen Up! Luncheon

Friday, May 9, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

TBA is introducing a new and innovative session, the Listen Up! Luncheon. Speakers - all bankers with a story to tell - will have five minutes and 20 slides to make their point, enlighten and entertain. The session theme is "The GameChanger that Inspired You."

Chairman's Dinner and Casino Royale

Friday, May 9, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Convention wraps up with the annual Chairman's Dinner on Friday evening. After a delicious dinner and toast to TBA's incoming chairman, bankers can enjoy an evening of casino games, including craps, poker, roulette tables and the Wheel of Fortune. At the end of the evening, attendees can cash in their chips for tickets and a chance to win prizes in a drawing.

Optional Activities

TBA golf tournament

Wednesday, May 7,8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year's golf tournament will be played at The Broadmoor East Course, ranked among the best golf courses in the nation. The course is known for its wide, tree-lined fairways and expansive greens. The course, which was completed in 1918, was the highest golf course in the U.S. - at 6,400 feet in elevation.

Olympic Training Center Tour & Shopping

Thursday, May 8,10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Guests can get a taste of the behindthe-scenes training of the athletes residing at the Olympic Training Center. Colorado Springs is home to the U.S. Olympic Committee and one of just three Olympic Training Centers in the nation. An athlete in training will lead guests on a guided tour of the facility.

Royal Gorge Route Railway

Friday, May 9,10:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Guests will have the opportunity to take one of the most scenic rides in the world. A train will take guests to the Royal Gorge for a spectacular journey through these mystical canyons.
