Children ride free thanks to donations

Sept. 03--According to a popular saying, there's no such thing as a free ride.

That's not quite true.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals, there were lots of free rides at Palisades Park on Friday morning.

Pineville Elementary School students in grades K-4 were the first to enjoy the rides provided by Deshler Amusements before the Labor Day Festival got under way.

This is the fourth year that children have been treated to free fun.

Mike Goode of the Pineville Fire Department said the tradition originated when PES was at its old location near the park.

"The kids would watch them setting stuff up and it didn't seem right for them to see all the rides and come back on Tuesday (after Labor Day) with everything gone and not having gotten a chance to ride anything."

Goode thanked those who made donations to make the rides possible.

This year's contributors to Kids Ride Free were Southern Homes, Linda Goode Phillips, Charlie's Pharmacy, Thorney Shrewsbury, Michael E. Cook, assessor, Jody Cook Insurance, Byron England, First Peoples Bank, Ole Jose Grill & Cantina, Pineville Furniture, John and Sharon Jackson and Pinnacle Drive In.
