Car crashes into Shoe Show storefront in Zebulon

March 25--ZEBULON -- Employees of a local footwear store spent the latter part of the week in clean-up mode after a car crashed into the storefront Thursday morning.

Police say 84-year-old Zebulon resident Velma Faison was pulling into a parking space facing the Shoe Show Mega Store on West Gannon Avenue about 11:30 a.m. when the floor console in her station wagon tipped over.

"It supposedly just tipped over and her foot got hung on the gas pedal," said Lt. Bob Grossman of the Zebulon Police Department. "It was an unfortunate accident."

No one was injured in the incident. There were two employees and no customers inside the store, which had been open about an hour and a half.

The vehicle jumped onto the sidewalk before striking near the junction of a brick wall and a large window pane, causing structural damage to the building.

The impact dislodged a shelf on the inside wall of the store, leaving shoe boxes and broken glass mixed together on the floor.

Considerably little damage was done to Faison's vehicle. Grossman said Faison's auto insurance will have to cover the damages to the store, but that she wasn't cited with any driving violations.

"She didn't intentionally cause it," Grossman said. "She wasn't careless and reckless or speeding. There was no real charge to charge her with."

Shoe Show, which previously had a location in the Walmart shopping center on East Gannon Avenue, opened the Gannon Avenue store in February.
