Cancer Support Group begins the push

Jan. 21--If your life has not been affected by cancer, then you might look to the person in front of you or the person behind you. The mere mention of the word can strike fear in a person -- not to mention the psychological toll it can take on families who have witnessed the devastation it brings to people's lives.

Joanna Costilla, executive director of the Cancer Support Group of Deming and Luna County Inc., spoke at the January meeting of the Luna County Commissioners, thanking them for their continued support of the local center, located in the historic Train Depot at 217 North Country Club Road. The non-profit organization has become a beacon of hope for residents and their families currently dealing with cancer.

"On behalf of our board members and entire organization, we would like to thank the community for its' continued support, donations and help for all our cancer warriors," said Costilla.

The Cancer Support Group offers many services to patients and their families. The main focus is to make sure that patients have transportation to and from out-of-town doctor's appointments and/or treatment centers. A fleet of vans purchased through community donations is at the ready to make the round trips. The fleet of five vans and 10 volunteer drivers transported 61 patients in 2013 with 587 trips locally, but also included Las Cruces, Silver City and El Paso, Texas. The center keeps busy all year long.

The center is equipped with an extensive cancer research library that can answer a variety of questions patients and their families may have.

Wigs, hats and scarves are just a few of the many services the support group can provide to patients who have undergone chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries.

Medical supplies that include walkers, wheelchairs and shower chairs are made available through vouchers and used rentals to help make home life a little more comfortable for the patient.

Vouchers can also be arranged for early detection testing (mammogram, hemoccults and PSA).

There is also a program available that can reimburse airfare, if necessary.

Costilla also serves as a patient advocate and can offer assistance in filing insurance and medical forms, scheduling appointments, finding programs to assist financially or just having someone to talk to.

Costilla reminds residents that April 26 is the date for the ninth annual "Celebration of Life" Cancer Walk. This event is the center's largest fund raiser and will be held at Voiers' Park on North Country Club Road.

Team meetings will be announced for person's wishing to join the event and set up a team that will take monetary pledges for the walk. The meetings are public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Local businesses, athletic teams, schools and families have made up the share of teams that participate each year. More information on the meetings will follow.

Costilla said that 100 percent of donations made to the center stay in Deming. The center employs one full-time employee and is assisted entirely by volunteers. From van operators to office help, residents volunteer their time.
