COHEN: THIS FARM BILL DOESN'T DO ENOUGH TO PROTECT AMERICANS FROM HUNGER

Farm bill cuts $8 billion from SNAP food-stamp program, hurts Americans struggling to make ends meet

[WASHINGTON, DC] - Congressman Steve Cohen today released the following statement after voting against the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013-the Farm Bill-which would cut roughly $8 billion from a critical part of our nation's safety net, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

<p>"I voted against this Farm Bill because it doesn't do enough to protect the most vulnerable Americans from the ravages of hunger," said Congress Cohen. "Last night, the President outlined his vision for building ladders of opportunity so that everyone who works hard and plays by the rules has a chance to get ahead and succeed. But these $8 billion in cuts will only make achieving that goal harder for precisely the people who can least afford it-like the more than 74,000 Shelby County households who rely on SNAP to keep food on the table. We must do more to give every American a fair shot at success, not putting a great burden on those struggling to lift themselves out of poverty."
