Boys and Girls Club to honor Don McQuary

April 23--Clarkston businessman and longtime community volunteer Don McQuary will receive the Don Poe Community Spirit Award at Thursday's Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley breakfast.

Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Mack Strong is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the seventh annual fundraising event, beginning at 7 a.m. at New Bridges Community Church in Lewiston.

McQuary, an owner at Stonebraker McQuary Insurance in Clarkston, was chosen for the community spirit honor by the award's past recipients, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Jon Evans said.

"He's just a great man who's done a lot of great things for all kinds of entities in the community," Evans said.

McQuary has been president of numerous boards in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, including the Clarkston Chamber of Commerce, Clarkston Rotary, Valley Vision and Tri-State Memorial Hospital.

He presently serves on the Tri-State Memorial Hospital board of directors, is a trustee for Walla Walla Community College, is co-chairman for Citizens for Children -- a committee supporting Clarkston school bonds and levies that he has chaired since 1986 -- and is on the Valley Vision executive committee.

The community spirit award's previous recipients are Don Poe, A.L. (Butch) Alford Jr., Joe Hall, Gary and Jutta Hughes, Tony Copeland and Gary Prasil.

Erik James, a junior at Lewiston High School who was recently named the organization's Youth of the Year, will also speak at the event about what the Boys and Girls Club has meant to him.

The Youth of the Year serves as an ambassador for the club, Evans said, speaking to groups such as Kiwanis and Rotary, and to local businesses.

According to a news release from the organization, the different branches that comprise the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley serve more than 3,600 children in Lewiston, Clarkston and Lapwai.

Funds raised at the breakfast help pay for operating costs and membership and program scholarships for area youth and families. There is no fee to attend the breakfast, though attendees are asked to donate to the organization. The breakfast raised approximately $55,000 last year.
