Baseball: Warriors earn split at home

Daily Gazette, Sterling, Ill.
By Daily Gazette, Sterling, Ill.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 18--The Sterling Golden Warriors (3-7, 2-2) split a doubleheader with

LaSalle-Peru Thursday night, bouncing back after a 12-0 loss in the opener at Gartner Park to win the nightcap 5-3.

The Cavaliers blanked Sterling (3-7, 2-2 NIB-12 West) in the first game, as Brady Siegmund picked up his second loss of the season.

In the second game, the Warriors jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first and didn't look back. Bryant Lilly picked up his second win to improve to 2-1, as he gave up three runs on five hits. Lilly also drove in a run for Sterling, along with Siegmund and Turner Morse.

Geneseo 7, Dixon 0: Nate Grocke's single was the lone hit for the Dukes in a NIB-12 West loss at Veterans Memorial Field.

Cal Jarrett (1-2) allowed five runs -- one earned -- and two hits in four innings for Dixon (4-8, 0-3).

Byron 9, Oregon 1: Tyler Blume's sacrifice fly accounted for the Hawks' lone run in a Big Northern West road loss to the rival Tigers.

Taylor Brubaker pitched five innings to take the loss. Joey Rowe had two hits, including a double, and scored the run.

Newman 2, Fulton 0: The Comets scored two runs on one wacky play with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 0-0 tie and nab a Three Rivers North win at home.

On a dropped third strike, Newman (5-4) scored a runner from third. When the Comet hitter rounded first and headed for second, the Newman runner who went to third on the wild pitch scored before the ball could get back to home plate.

Comet starter Trevor Bolin outdueled Ethan Jones form Fulton (5-7), as Bolin allowed three hits and Jones gave up four.

Erie-Prophetstown 10, Bureau Valley 0, 5 inn.: Ethan Howard struck out eight in a two-hitter, and also drove in a pair of runs to lead the Panthers to a Three Rivers North win in Prophetstown.

Jordan Chandler had two hits and two RBIs, and Koby Kuhnen also drove in two runs for Erie-Prophetstown (6-5, 5-0).

Josh Mead took the loss for the Storm.

Eastland 5, West Carroll 4: Nick Simpson drove in Marshall Fink in the top of the ninth for the Cougars.

Heading into the fifth inning, the Thunder held a 2-0 lead before Fink drove in a pair of runs as part of a four-run inning to give Eastland a 4-2 lead.

West Carroll responded in the bottom of the sixth, as Trevor Jones drove in a pair of runs to knot things up to send it to extras.

AFC 5, South Beloit 4: The Raiders went on the road and got their first NUIC East win of the year, behind four hits and two RBIs from Brandyn Ibarra.

Matt Gendusa also had two RBIs, and David Zinke added two hits and an RBI for AFC (3-6, 1-5). Bret Gittleson had three hits at the plate and also picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief of starter Matt Heng.

Forreston-Polo 2, Durand-Pec 1: Andrew Beasley pitched into the seventh inning, and the Cardinals scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win an NUIC East game at home.

Nathan Schneiderman got the last two outs for the save of Beasley's victory, and Brayden Wierzycki had the lone RBI for Forreston-Polo (6-5, 4-1).

Rock Falls 7, Winnebago 1: Austin Donoho (1-2) earned the win for Rock Falls (5-6), as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out nine in seven innings.

The Rockets scored three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to erase a 1-0 deficit, before adding an insurance run in the top half of the

seventh.

Jacob Mammosser led the way offensively with four hits and an RBI, while teammates Clay Velazquez and Dallas Jones each added three hits in the win.

Morrison 17, Amboy 1: the Mustangs erupted for 14 runs in the third inning, and beat Amboy in a five-inning run-rule decision.

Morrison had 15 hits, including three apiece from Ben Tegeler and Kollin Burn while teammates Justin Jensen and Bill Lee Greul each hit two doubles.

Greul also earned the win on the mound. He struck out nine batters and allowed one hit and one run in five innings.

Dakota 5, Milledgeville 4: Devin Biller hit a home run for the Missiles (4-2) in the home loss.

Kameron DawTyne and Zach Herin each had two doubles for Milledgeville. Pitcher Blake Kappes took the loss after allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings. He struck out five.
