BRIEF: Teachers, Rockland-area board reach labor deal

April 28--ROCKLAND, Maine -- The school board and approximately 200 teachers in the Rockland-area school system have reached a tentative labor contract after months of negotiations.

The RSU 13 Board is scheduled to vote on the pact Thursday evening at its regular monthly meeting. The teachers are expected to hold a ratification vote this week prior to the board's vote, according to Seacoast Education Association President Charles Gallagher.

The teachers have been working under terms of the prior contract that expired last summer.

That contract has a pay scale that runs from $34,497 for a teacher with no experience and a bachelor's degree to a high of $60,800 for a teacher with 19 years or more of experience with 15 credits beyond a master's degree. The contract also calls for the district to pay 100 percent of health insurance premiums for the employee and 75 percent of the difference between an individual policy and a family policy.

Interim Superintendent Michael Wilhelm said the details of the new contract are confidential until ratified.
