BRIEF: Keavy home destroyed by fire [The Times-Tribune, Corbin, Ky.]

Jan. 09--CORBIN -- A 6-year-old boy was airlifted to a Lexington hospital Saturday after he suffered burns when he ran back into his family's burning home to try and save his dog, according to Keavy Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ronnie Bales and Assistant Chief Skip Dodd.

Firefighters were called to 3535 Level Green Road in Keavy about 12:17 p.m. and, once there, they found a family's mobile home engulfed in flames.

The 6-year-old boy suffered first- and second-degree burns when he attempted to rescue the dog. The boy was not able to get his pet from the burning home.

The 6-year-old was flown to University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of his burns. Two adults and a 5-year-old were taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalations and minor burns.

It took the 13 firefighters who responded about 10 minutes to get the blaze under control. They remained on scene for about two hours ensuring all hot spots were extinguished.

The home was destroyed by the fire and the family has no insurance, Bales and Dodd said.

It is believed the fire may have been caused by a portable heater.

No firefighters were injured.

Air Methods and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County assisted.
