BRIEF: Insurance firm has open house in Cooperstown

Sept. 12--Hughson and Benson Associates Insurance has been expanding. and will have a grand opening event at its recently opened Cooperstown office from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

The firm purchased 59 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown, the site of the village's original firehouse, and remodeled it for an office, according to Dan Root, senior vice president. The firm previously rented an office in Hartwick Seminary, he said, and with the move to Cooperstown, the staff in that office increased to five from four.

John Ryland, president of Hughson and Benson, will head up the Cooperstown office, which opened earlier this month, Root said Friday.

About a year ago, the company bought the Gary Jennings firm in Hartwick Seminary, Root said, and Jennings has joined Hughson and Benson.

Also, Michael Gravelding manages the firm's office at 134 Main St. in Richfield Springs, which opened in June, Root said.

The Oneonta office at 326 Main St. has 11 employees, Root said. The firm sells automobile, home and other insurance and serves a multi-county area.
