BRIEF: Group opposed to flood-control gate at Smith Canal to hold meeting Thursday

The Record, Stockton, Calif.

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 29--STOCKTON -- ?A group opposed to a plan to build a flood-control gate at the mouth of Smith Canal will hold a meeting Thursday to explain its concerns.

The group, which calls itself "Save Dad's Point," will meet at 6 p.m. at the Stockton Rod & Gun Club, 3120 Monte Diablo Avenue.

Dad's Point is the narrow spit of land that extends from Louis Park along the Deep Water Ship Channel. The proposed gate would be part of a rock barrier extending from the end of the point to the north bank of the mouth of Smith Canal.

The gate is intended to rescue thousands of Country Club residents who are currently forced to buy flood insurance.

An ad placed by the group in today's Record, however, raises concerns about aesthetics, boating navigation, water quality, fish access and other issues.
