BRIEF: Edinburg woman gets 16 months for Aflac scam [The Monitor, McAllen, Texas]

April 18--MCALLEN -- An Edinburg woman received 16 months in prison Tuesday after she admitted to an insurance scam.

Lucilia Alcala, 41, was one of 36 defendants who pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a scam that bilked more than $3 million from the American Family Life Assurance Company, known as Aflac.

U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez sentenced Alcala to 16 months in prison without parole and ordered her to pay $192,400 in restitution.

Alcala admitted that she filed fake injury reports to Aflac after she visited doctors in Reynosa who signed off on the scam for a $15 kickback. Prosecutors said the 36 defendants filed thousands of fake reports, claiming more than $3 million in illegal proceeds from the insurance company.
