BRIEF: DOI: Greensboro man committed insurance fraud [News & Record, Greensboro, N.C.]

June 21--GREENSBORO -- A local man has been charged with insurance fraud over altered dates and forged doctor signatures, according to the N.C. Department of Insurance.

Steven Antwan Poole, 28, faces one count of insurance fraud and another of obtaining property by false pretense, the department said in a news release. The department said Poole submitted fraudulent disability claims with forged doctors' signatures to Cuna Mutual Insurance Company to stretch compensation from a 2010 work injury claim into payments that lasted until January of this year. He was overpaid about $11,200, the department said.

His court date is scheduled for August, the department said. A News & Record attempt to reach Poole today by telephone was not successful.

Insurance fraud accounts for 10 cents on every dollar of premiums paid, the department said, and investigators have recovered more than $55 million over the last four years by investigating more than 18,600 complaints. Those investigations led to 800 arrests and 430 criminal convictions, with many cases still in the pipeline, the department said.
