Albemarle baseball season ends at East Surry

May 26--The Albemarle Bulldogs wrapped up the team's 2014 season with a road loss to an undefeated East Surry Cardinals squad.

Tyler Marion earned the win for the Cardinals (28-0) allowing one earned run on three hits in the complete-game victory.

Senior Justin Crump took the loss for Albemarle (22-5) allowing one earned run on seven hits in four innings of work on the mound. Another senior, Catawba signee Bryan Blanton, pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. K.J. McKinney laced the opening pitch of the game into left-center field for a double and later scored on a Zach Brafford RBI groundout.

East Surry tied the game in the second inning. Cody Ashburn reached on an error and scored on a Logan Sheets RBI single.

Madison Chilton gave the Cardinals the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double.

Weston Payne added an insurance run for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double.

"I thought we matched up well with East Surry," Albemarle head coach Jamie Kimrey said.

"It's the kind of game you would like to have more than one shot at. (Marion) was not overpowering but did a good job of keeping us off balance."

The Albemarle head coach also talked about the team's efforts including the six seniors on the squad that helped lead the Bulldogs to the YVC West regular-season and tournament championships.

"I'm proud of the effort and work these guys put in this season," Kimrey said.

"Their work paid off with an outstanding season. We will miss the senior class."

Blanton, Crump, Guenther, McKinney, Dillon Moon and Andre Ridenhour graduate this season.
