5 things EVSC School Board members approved at Monday’s meeting

Dec. 12--If you didn't make Monday night's Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. School Board meeting, here are five things you missed.

1) 2018 diesel fuel price saves money

Board members approved extending the current diesel fuel contract with Heritage Petroleum after EVSC's Office of Business Affairs officials worked with the company and EVSC's bus transportation to set a fixed diesel fuel price at $2.18 for 2018.

The cost represents a savings of 37 cents compared to the 2017 fixed price. The new fixed price is expected to save the EVSC $111,000 over the 2017 cost.

2) Anthem reinsurance renewal

Steve Snyder, EVSC insurance consultant, secured quotes from reinsurance carriers which included two specific deductible amounts: the current $300,000 deductible and a second option of $325,000.

Anthem's deductible amount is per subscriber and the other quotes are on a per member basis, officials said. The per member basis option has more individual liability than Anthem's proposal.

The $300,000 deductible premiums are higher with less risk, and the $325,000 deductible premiums are lower with more risk. However, officials said EVSC's historical medical claims data suggests the district move to a $325,000 specific deductible.

The one-year renewal, effective Jan. 1, 2018, is a reduction of $90,182 in reinsurance premiums in 2018.

3) Property and casualty insurance renewal

EVSC's Office of Operations recommended renewal of EVSC property and casualty insurance with Liberty Mutual.

EVSC's loss ratio has continued to trend positively, officials said. The renewal shows a 7.8 percent increase, or about $50,000, in premium because of an increase in appraisal values and the addition of properties. However, officials said the increase is still $80,000 less than a proposal from last year.

The renewed policy has the same plan design and deductible structure as past years.

4) Student psychological evaluations

Board members approved Lauren McKim's consulting agreement with the EVSC to conduct student psychological evaluations and achievement assessments for the school district. For each completed evaluation McKim will be paid $140, not to exceed $15,000.

5) EVSC representative

EVSC board members voted to reappoint Roger Lehman as EVSC representative to the Area Plan Commission.
