A Heartfelt Letter to the Independent Advisor Community

To my fellow independent financial professionals,

I’ve been thinking a lot about who we are—and who we’re not.

We are not the billion-dollar asset-management giants who spend millions each year convincing the public that fees are noble but commissions are somehow questionable.
We are not the organizations who attack annuities, criticize life insurance, or shame income guarantees just because those tools don’t enrich their business models.
And we are certainly not the ones trying to fit every client into the same fee-based portfolio, regardless of age, risk tolerance, or retirement readiness.

We are something very different.
We are independent.
We are consumer-first.
And we are in this together.

“Us” vs. “Them” Isn’t About Competition—It’s About Truth

When I say “them,” I’m referring to the massive captive AUM institutions who have spent decades shaping a narrative that benefits them, not the consumer.

They’ve told retirees that commissions are bad—while quietly charging fees year after year, even when portfolios lose value.
They’ve told people that annuities are dangerous—while knowing full well that guaranteed income, tax-deferred growth, and principal protection are exactly what millions of Americans need.
They’ve told clients that life insurance is unnecessary—while relying on those same products to fund their own tax-efficient legacy plans.

Their message is loud.
Their budgets are enormous.
Their reach is everywhere.

But here’s the truth they can’t drown out:

Commissions are not the enemy.
Retirement income guarantees are not the enemy.
Life insurance is not the enemy.
Ignorance is the enemy.
Confusion is the enemy.
Fear is the enemy.

And together, we can fight those.

Annuities & Life Insurance Have Been Here Longer Than All of Us

Long before modern financial markets existed, civilizations used annuity-type arrangements for lifetime income. Ancient Rome paid its citizens annuities for service. Early Europe relied on annuities to protect widows and retirees. Colonial America issued annuity certificates to help fund the Revolutionary War.
