Why does Melania Trump wear sunglasses at night?

Oct. 06--You could say that Melania Trump can't catch a break when it comes to her wardrobe choices.

But this very fashionable and wealthy first lady has made some choices that leave people deriding her for being out of touch with the struggles of regular Americans: a $51,000 jacket, designer stilettos for journeys to natural disaster zones.

Or, her choices just leave people scratching their heads wondering, "What's that about?"

Melania's latest move, having to do with her penchant for wearing sunglasses, provoked both reactions. People especially took notice on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when she and President Donald Trump arrived back at the White House and she was wearing her signature black shades -- in the dark.

On Tuesday, the first couple had returned to Washington after getting a look at the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. On Wednesday, they had been in Las Vegas, the scene of the deadly mass shooting Sunday.

On both nights, as Melania walked hand-in-hand with her husband across the South Lawn of the White House, she was still wearing her shades, despite the sun having gone down hours before.

Some Twitter users took notice of her "nighttime" shades. They pointed out it wasn't the first time she's accessorized this way after dark and pondered why.

Some found humor in the choice, quoting the hit 1980s song "Sunglasses at Night" by Canadian singer Corey Hart:

Others wondered if she has an eye condition, or if the former model is bothered by the flash bulbs at photo pool events, or if she's even shy or self-conscious about her eyes.

Still another offered the idea that maybe Melania will make wearing sunglasses at night cool -- in the same way Jack Nicholson made it look cool to wear his shades at the Academy Awards.

Others addressed Melania's general habit of wearing sunglasses during public appearances, with one joking that it might be her way of hiding her reactions to the potentially outrageous or offensive things her husband can say in these situations.

But others had serious concerns about the sunglasses, expressing dismay or anger that Melania often has her eyes shaded when she interacts with regular people, making her seem that she wants to keep herself remote or aloof.

They especially noticed it when she met with Hurricane Maria victims and rescue workers in Puerto Rico Tuesday. They thought the sunglasses prevented people from making eye contact with her. Here are some of those reactions:
