Val Demings: Could she be veep candidate?

Orlando Sentinel (FL)

Jan. 23--In public-affairs programming this weekend on Central Florida's TV stations:

Rep. Val Demings' performance as an impeachment manager will be a topic on "Central Florida Spotlight" at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on WFTV-Channel 9. Juan Peñalosa, executive director of the Florida Democratic Party, talks with Greg Warmoth about Demings, an Orlando Democrat, and speculation that she could be a vice presidential candidate.

Peñalosa discusses the Florida presidential preference primary March 17 and the fight for Hispanic voters, especially in Osceola and Orange counties, in November's general election. He discusses Florida Democrats' putting up a billboard in Kissimmee showing President Donald Trump throwing paper towels at people in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Peñalosa says the image demonstrates the president's lack of concern for Puerto Ricans.

"Orlando Matters" will visit New Smyrna Beach, the hometown of San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, at 10 a.m. Saturday on WOFL-Channel 35. Mostert will play in Feb. 2's Super Bowl, and his coaches explain why they're not surprised he overcame many NFL challenges. Host Ryan Elijah also talks with political analyst Mike Haridopolos, the Republican who was president of the Florida Senate, about the latest news from the Florida Legislature. (The Sentinel has a content-sharing agreement with WOFL.)

State Rep. Bruce Antone, D-Orlando, will discuss bills he's filed for this year's legislative session on "Political Connections" at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday on Spectrum News 13. The program also looks at Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Bushnell in Sumter County. PolitiFact Truth-O-Meter will rate a social media claim about Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

"In Focus with Allison Walker-Torres" will discuss student athletes and whether they should profit from their image or likeness at 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Spectrum News 13. The guests are state Sen. Randolph Bracy, D-Orlando, and state Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Naples.

"The Weekly on ClickOrlando.com" previews the Pro Bowl, which will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. "The Weekly" starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on WKMG-Channel 6. Host Justin Warmoth interviews Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan and NFL representative Matt Shapiro. They discuss the Pro Bowl's impact on Central Florida, why Orlando is a great location for the game and the NFL events that Camping World Stadium could host.

"NewsNight" examines environmental challenges facing Central Florida's coastline at 8:30 p.m. Friday on WUCF TV. Host Nancy Alvarez of WFTV welcomes panelists Rachel Joy of Florida Today, Greg Pallone of Spectrum News 13 and Amy Green of 90.7 WMFE. Topics for discussion: Gov. Ron DeSantis has urged lawmakers to act on sea level rise, and the legislature is considering bills to improve resiliency. The panel discusses efforts to clean up the Indian River Lagoon and why pollution remains a problem. The program repeats at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Lara Friedman, president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace, discusses the Israel-Palestine conflict on "Global Perspectives" at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on WUCF TV. She examines obstacles to possible peace agreements.
