Update: Good days and bad days for Taran Nolan, wife of Costa Mesa football coach

Orange County Register (CA)

Nov. 2--Costa Mesa High School football coach Jimmy Nolan made his choice clear as Election Day approached.

"Trump or Biden ... really? I vote for Tar."

That would be Taran, his wife, who, as Nolan wrote on his Facebook page, "has good days and bad days, as expected" as she recovers from a two-car collision in September in South Carolina that left two people dead. The youngest of the Nolans' four children, Micki, and the driver of the other vehicle, Glendora Holmes, died in the crash.

Taran suffered severe injuries that left her unable to move her extremities. She remains in care at Medical University Hospital in South Carolina.

Nolan posted an update Thursday, Oct. 30, on Facebook about his family's ongoing recovery from the accident. The Nolan family was in the process of relocating to South Carolina. Nolan had committed to coaching the Costa Mesa football team through the season that begins in January. The start of the season was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Two of the Nolan children, Jimmy and Daisy, were hospitalized with various injuries. The oldest child, daughter Paisley, was in Southern California with Jimmy at the time of the accident.

Costa Mesa assistant coach Bill Lux has taken charge of the Costa Mesa football program, per Nolan's request, according to Costa Mesa athletic director Sharon Uhl, as the Mustangs conduct conditioning drills.

Taran Nolan's bad days prompted a CT scan two weeks ago, the results of which Jimmy wrote "were fine ... still don't know what caused the setback ... I'm told 'not uncommon with this type of injury.' She also had an EKG on Saturday but did not disclose results.

One of the people attending to Taran at the hospital tested positive for COVID-19, Nolan wrote Sunday.

"As a result," he wrote, "Tar had to be tested and I wasn't allowed to visit until the negative test came back. That was first day/night I couldn't be with her ... killed me. But I'm with her now and she's sleeping (rough night, but she's at peace)."

Jimmy wrote of how grateful he is for all of the supportive messages he has received. He also wrote of how close the Nolan children are, and how it has sunk in with Paisley, Daisy and son Jimmy that Micki is gone.

Jimmy also wrote of how difficult it has been for him: "I disagree Mick's 'better off now' or 'in a better place.' She was amazing here. I understand she's in Heaven with loved ones ... But it was Heaven on earth with her here. My Mick deserved a long life with us (unacceptable). This isn't open for discussion ... my daughter ~ my rules."
