Two million bottles of French wine destroyed in warehouse fire
New York Daily News, The (NY)
April 19-- Apr. 19--The blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral wasn't the only disaster to hit France this week.
A warehouse fire on Tuesday destroyed about 2 million bottles of wine and spirits in the suburbs of Bordeaux, southwest of France, local news outlets reported.
The fire ruined about half of the stock at the Sovex Grands Châteaux facility, located in Carbon-Blanc, according to France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
A dramatic cell phone video posted on Facebook by a warehouse employee shows staff racing out of the facility to escape the blaze, which can be seen moving quickly through an area filled with crates.
France 3 reported that dozens of firefighters battled the fire. The cause is still under investigation, but The Local news site said it appears the fire started in the ceiling and then spread to the wooden craters and pallets.
The blaze came one day after the iconic, 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral was partially destroyed by a massive fire. The church's spire and most of its roof went up in flames after an apparent electrical short-circuit.
Sovex Grands Châteaux was established in 1982 and its products are inspired by "the great wines of Bordeaux," the merchant's LinkedIn page states.
