Tufts Health Plan Medicare Plans Earn 5 Stars from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

Business Wire

One of 14 plans nationally to receive the rating

WATERTOWN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- For a second year in a row, Tufts Health Plan has earned 5 stars out of a possible 5 for its Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO and Senior Care Options plans from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of its annual Star ratings for 2017. Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO is the largest Medicare Advantage plan in Massachusetts with nearly 105,000 members.

Tufts Health Plan received the distinction for both quality and performance. CMS rated nearly 400 Medicare Advantage plans this year. The rating puts Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO and Senior Care Options plans among the top four percent of plans nationally.

“The 5 Star rating reflects the efforts of our entire organization, and of each and every interaction we have with our members,” said Patty Blake, president of Senior Products at Tufts Health Plan. “It also reflects the collaboration with the providers in our network, who provide high quality care and service to these older adults, many of whom have complex medical needs. We take great pride in achieving this distinction as it reflects our continuous commitment to ensure the best possible service and care for all of our members.”

CMS calculates Star ratings from 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best) based on quality and performance for Medicare health and drug plans to help beneficiaries, their families and caregivers compare plans. Ratings are given for quality measures across several categories including keeping members healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy services.

Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO and Senior Care Options plans received 5 stars in 23 out of 42 measures including:

  • Rating of Health Care Quality
  • Rating of Health Plan
  • Care Coordination
  • Getting Appointments and Care Quickly

The top rating from CMS comes on the heels of a recent announcement that Tufts Health Plan’s private HMO/PPO Commercial plans received a rating of 5 – the highest rating possible – by the National Committee on Quality Assurance.* Tufts Health Plan is the only health plan in the nation to receive the rating for both its HMO and PPO products. Tufts Health Plan PPO is the only PPO plan in America to receive the 5 out of 5 rating. Tufts Health Plan’s Medicaid plans also rated very high, achieving a 4.5 out of a possible 5.**
