WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 -- Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, issued the following news release:
Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is releasing $168 million Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds for mitigation to help North Carolina recover following years of natural disasters and flooding.
On Wednesday, Senator Tillis discussed North Carolina's ongoing disaster recovery efforts with HUD Secretary Ben Carson and requested HUD expedite the release of $168 million in disaster assistance to North Carolina. Today, HUD and the Trump administration accepted Senator Tillis' request and reaffirmed their commitment to North Carolina's recovery effort by releasing those funds.
In June, Senators Tillis and Richard Burr secured language in the Congressional disaster supplemental bill mandating that the $168 million in mitigation assistance be distributed to North Carolina within the 90 days of the bill becoming law.
"Earlier this week, I spoke with Secretary Carson to encourage HUD to expedite $168 million in CDBG-DR funding previously allocated to North Carolina for mitigation activities. I'm grateful to Secretary Carson and President Trump for delivering on that promise to North Carolina and for their proven commitment to helping our state recover," said Senator Thom Tillis. "Although relief after a natural disaster can never come soon enough, North Carolinians will now have additional resources that we fought hard to secure so that our state can rebuild more resiliently."
