No sports cars or "anything with excessive horsepower relative to its weight" was included, as those vehicles "make it too easy to speed and can tempt young drivers to take risks," a news release said. Large SUVs and pickup trucks also didn't make the cut, as they "pose more risk to others on the road, including pedestrians, bicyclists and people in smaller vehicles."
On the opposite end, there are also no vehicles under 2,750 pounds because "small, light vehicles may not provide enough protection in crashes with other vehicles."
While the recommendations focus mostly on safety and reliability, costs such as insurance premiums should also be considered by parents and their teen drivers.
