There Are 10,000 New Reasons Every Day to Change the Way Americans Retire

PR Newswire

HOUSTON, Jan. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- When looking into retirement, the roughly 10,000 baby boomers retiring every day usually have a limiting four-step plan offered to them by investment companies and their sales people because it's easy and profitable.

Besides the obvious fact that these typical product-centric retirement plans don't look at retirement from the retiree's perspective, the big downfall is that they usually cover only four areas—401(k)s, insurance, pensions and Social Security, says Retirement Specialist Sharon Duncan, president of Houston-based Selah Financial Services Inc.

"While these are certainly important topics, ignoring so many other aspects of retirement is exactly where Selah Financial advisors have seen some of the more devastating mistakes happen," says Duncan.

After years of listening to people who made bad retirement decisions that couldn't be fixed, Duncan wanted to turn things around and help empower retirees, prompting her to develop Selah Financial's proprietary Retiring FITT System™. "When people retire, they need a process that helps them make informed decisions and puts them on the right path to achieve their retirement dreams," says Duncan, "and that wasn't available until now."

Retiring FITT provides a comprehensive roadmap that helps retirees, together with a team of highly knowledgeable technical financial experts, make the decisions that abound when looking at our 25 recommended areas, says Duncan.

"People in the financial advising industry tend to offer overly broad guidelines to retirees, or focus on rollovers and insurance alone," says Duncan. Important but rarely considered factors are often the intangibles, such as having a purpose in retirement, adds Duncan. In order to provide a clear picture of what retirement may look like, Selah Financial hosts regular workshops that help clients focus emotionally on life after work.

"The fact is, most financial advisors don't like to discuss retirement concerns beyond the typical four because they don't have the technical skills, or they believe there's no profit to be made," says Duncan.

"I believe it's time we change the approach to retiring in this country by putting the power back in the hands of retirees and away from the sales people."

Sharon Duncan , CFP®, is located at 1550 W. Bay Area Boulevard, Ste. 101, Friendswood TX, 77546, and can be reached at [email protected] or 281.990.7100. Security and Advisory Services offered through Commonwealth Financial Network®, Member FINRA/SIPC, a Registered Investment Advisor.
