Texas Mutual boosts KC contributions to $1.2 million

Kilgore News Herald (TX)

Feb. 06--For the 12th year in a row, Texas Mutual Insurance Company has donated $100,000 to Kilgore College to support its Risk Management Institute.

KC President Dr. Brenda Kays thanked the insurance company for its annual donation which will help the RMI continue to offer workplace safety courses to employers, workers and the public.

"We are grateful to receive this grant from our partners at Texas Mutual, who share our commitment to the prevention of workplace accidents and to overall workplace safety. Workplace safety education is always a sound investment. Thanks to this grant, our growing risk management program will continue to help workers in Kilgore and across Texas be more prepared and successful on the job, creating safer work environments for employees," Kays said.

In addition to providing KC with funding for its RMI courses for over a decades, Texas Mutual supports similar programs at other institutions of higher education. Since 1999, the insurance company has donated $7.6 million in safety education grants. KC is among 10 colleges in Texas which offer workplace safety education with the help of Texas Mutual funding.

Since its creation in 2008, KC's RMI has hosted more than 434 workplace safety classes for more than 5,000 attendees. Almost 1,990 people have earned Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Cards through coursework at the institute.

Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual, said the company was pleased to fund workplace safety education at the college level.

"For 20 years we've partnered with Texas community colleges to ensure tens of thousands of workers get the education they need to work safely. We are happy to continue our support to these colleges, so safety programs can be available to their communities and available to employees across the state. These safety courses, along with many other company initiatives, demonstrate our commitment to creating a stronger, safer Texas," Bourquin said.
