Storm central: Latest snowstorm updates for Concord

Wicked Local Northwest (Concord, MA)

Dec. 15--Update: 12:45 p.m.

Superintendent Laurie Hunter said a snow day would be possible if the storm causes power outages.

"It would be an old fashioned snow day at that point -- or a power day, I guess," she said.

Update: 11:42 a.m.

Tom Lucey, a spokesperson for the Concord and Concord-Carlisle school districts, said there will be no snow days as the schools move to remote learning, if necessary.

"That applies to the rest of the school year as well," he said.

--------------------

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Concord and surrounding towns.

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches is expected.

Travel could be difficult and the hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute.

Snow is expected to develop by Wednesday evening and become heavy at times Wednesday night into early Thursday.

The snow should taper off by Thursday afternoon.

Shelter option

The Harvey Wheeler Community Center, located at 1276 Main St., serves as the town's lone storm shelter.

The shelter can house up to 110 residents and is set up to feed people in case it is needed long-term. Fire Chief Thomas Judge said for those with pets, the shelter can accommodate them, too.

All ambulances in Concord have four-wheel drive. But if the roads are too treacherous, the Concord DPW would assist with a plow.

In case residents need to use the shelter, the following is a partial list of recommended items to bring:

-- Clothing and bedding for several days

-- Toiletries

-- Prescription medications for at least 14 days

-- Prescribed medical supplies

-- Pharmacy contact information

-- Copies of medical insurance and Medicare cards

-- Canes, walkers, wheelchairs

-- Cell phone and charger

-- Extra eyeglasses, hearing aids and batteries

-- Photo ID

-- Contact numbers for family/friends

-- ATM/credit cards

-- Small bills and coins for vending machines

-- Pet food and supplies

Weapons are not allowed in the shelter.

In the event people will be housed for days, the town can have supplies delivered and cooked on site.

The Concord Journal will update this story as the storm develops.
