Jan. 07--TRAVERSE CITY -- Two men fought in the street after slippery roads led to a crash.
A nearby homeowner reported a two-car crash and the ensuing fight Friday at 8:43 p.m. on Yarrow Trail in Garfield Township. Grand Traverse County sheriff's Capt. Randy Fewless said the scuffle began after one driver slid on an icy road past his turn. It appears the men know each other and may have had "hard feelings" prior to the crash, he said.
The 19-year-old driver said he backed up to the driveway he missed, but another car hit him from behind. The driver of the second car, a 41-year-old Traverse City man, told deputies he slid into the other car while it tried making a U-turn, Fewless said.
Both drivers got out of their cars to argue and fight -- the 19-year-old reported "facial pain" after the fight, Fewless said.
The 41-year-old man claimed the 19-year-old driver rammed the back of his car after he pulled ahead to get off the road. He told deputies he left his car to confront the driver and was pushed and punched by the 19-year-old, Fewless said.
Witnesses said the 19-year-old got back into his car after the fight and backed into and damaged a third car, he said.
Neither man suffered significant injuries and neither sought medical attention.
Deputies arrested the 19-year-old man and will seek assault and malicious destruction of property charges. Fewless said he was also cited for driving without insurance. He was transported to Grand Traverse County's jail.
