Single-vehicle accident in Peoria

May 18--Driver and passenger hospitalized

OSKALOOSA -- According to a press release from the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office a single-vehicle accident took place at the intersection of Cross Street and Main Street in Peoria, Iowa, Wednesday night around 9 p.m.

County Law Enforcement responded to the scene as well as Pella Fire and Rescue and the New Sharon Police Department.

The Mahaska County Sheriff's office reported that when they arrived on the scene, "a 2010 Lincoln Navigator was found on its top. A male passenger from the vehicle was found lying on the ground unconscious outside the overturned vehicle."

It was reported that the single vehicle driven by 33-year-old Lisa Marie Dickerson of Newton Iowa struck a utility pole and rolled over on its top.

The passenger was identified in the press release as 37-year-old Jaime Alejo Lopez of Ankeny. Lopez was flown from Peoria to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines with unknown injuries.

The hospital where Lopez was taken did not return a call to the Herald about the extent of his injuries; his condition is unknown at this time.

The report also said that the driver Dickerson was transported by Pella Ambulance to the Pella Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

After her treatment, Dickerson was subsequently placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated. She was then transported to the Mahaska County Jail. Dickerson was also charged with failure to maintain control of her vehicle and failure to post proof of insurance.

Editor's note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
