U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act by a ruling of 7 to 2:
"Over the last twelve years, the Affordable Care Act has helped more than a hundred million Americans access lifesaving medical care - and over the past year-plus, a once-in-a-generation pandemic drove home the importance of quality, accessible, affordable healthcare.
"After Americans witnessed the physical, emotional and economic costs of COVID-19, the health coverage and protections guaranteed by the ACA are more important than ever.
"I'm grateful and relieved that the ACA will stand, giving Americans the peace of mind that they can continue protecting their health and their family's health.
"In the days ahead, I urge the law's critics to abandon their Sisyphean campaign to tear down these successful healthcare protections, and instead come to the table to pursue bipartisan fixes that can improve the health and well-being of all Americans."
