Rocky Hill grand list up slightly

The town’s grand list of taxable property grew by $10.8 million, or .46% to $2.46 billion in 2020, according to town officials.

The real estate portion grew by $4.6 million, or .25%, to $1.85 billion.

The personal property portion grew by $3.2 million, or 1.77%, to $184 million.

The motor vehicle portion grew by $3.1 million, or 1.76%, to $177.4 million.

Town Manager John Mehr said the increase in the real estate portion of the list was attributed to the completion of the Shell gas station, the Auto Zone and the completion of several single-family homes primarily on Hawthorne Circle, Stonebrook Crossing and Southbrook Road.

On the personal property portion of the list, Mehr said the increase was attributed to Nutmeg Federal Credit Union moving its headquarters to Enterprise Drive, and to Scientific Games.

Mehr said the motor vehicle increase was attributed to people purchasing newer vehicles and to larger ones retaining value because of lower gas prices.

Mayor Lisa Marotta said Tuesday that “[the increase] could have been better, but we had some tax appeals that impacted us.”

Marotta said she also spoke with the town assessor about whether the pandemic played any role in the meager increase but was told that it didn’t appear to be the cause.
