WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 -- Rep. Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., issued the following statement:
"Today I voted in support of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. I believe life begins at conception, and this is one step we can take to save thousands of lives. As a cosponsor of this legislation, I joined a letter sent to President Trump earlier in the year to express our commitment to working with the White House to protect life.
"In January, hundreds of my constituents traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life. When I met with them and spoke about our shared priorities, this legislation was a top priority.
"I am glad the House has passed this legislation today, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take up this commonsense bill to establish affirmative protections for children like Micah Pickering, who is living proof that children born at 20 weeks can enjoy a full life with proper care and legal protection."
