Last night, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) held a virtual National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Conversation with Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin, Houston Chief Recovery Officer Steve Costello, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Regional Flood Insurance Liaison Gilbert Giron to discuss changes to flood insurance costs. Earlier this month, FEMA implemented a new methodology, Risk Rating 2.0, that takes into consideration additional risks and property characteristics--including flood frequency, type of flooding, and distance from water--to determine insurance rates.
"Flooding affects all of us in Houston, and flood insurance is critical to everyone in our community," said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. "I am grateful for the work and the partnership of Council Member Kamin, Steve Costello, and Gilbert Giron in this effort and I thank them for joining the conversation to explain the changes and to answer questions from our community."
NFIP policyholders who signed up for new policies on or after October 1 of this yearwill have their rates calculated under the new pricing methodology. All remaining policies renewing on or after April 1, 2022 will be subject to the new methodology.
