Feb. 08--QUEENSBURY -- A Corinth Road home was damaged by an early morning fire on Friday, and a resident who was asleep inside was awakened by a smoke detector so she could escape, but the family dog was unable to escape the blaze.
No injuries were reported from the fire at 651 Corinth Road, near the intersection with Tonmark Drive, which broke out just before 3 a.m. Firefighters managed to keep most of the fire confined to the basement, and the house appeared salvageable, West Glens Falls Fire Chief Jeff Dailey said.
Resident Lynn Allen, who lives in the home with her husband, who was working overnight, said she awoke to a smoke detector going off, and escaped through heavy smoke.
"The house was just filled with smoke," she said.
She could not initially get to the dog, and when West Glens Falls firefighters located it, efforts to resuscitate it were unsuccessful.
Dailey said the fire began in the home's basement and a possible electrical cause was being investigated. Smoke and scorch marks are evident from basement windows in the house.
"It was a good stop. Everything was contained to the basement, other than a small area in the kitchen in the first floor," the chief said.
The family does have insurance, but will not be able to stay in the home until repairs are made.
Firefighters from West Glens Falls, Queensbury Central, Bay Ridge and South Queensbury and Warren County fire investigators responded to the call.
