Police in Hartford arrest city man in fatal car crash
Hartford Courant (CT)
A Hartford man has been charged with operating under the influence and other offenses in a fatal motor vehicle crash on Washington Street last weekend, police in Hartford said Saturday.
Jayquan Hemingway, 26, of 207 Wethersfield Ave. was driving north on Washington Street just after 4 a.m. on May 17 when he did not stop for a red light, police said. Hemingway’s white Infiniti M37 crashed into a red Pontiac Grand Prix traveling west on Retreat Avenue at the intersection with Washington, police said.
Eladio LeBron, 44, of 103 Van Block Ave., was a rear-seat passenger in the Pontiac and suffered serious injuries. LeBron was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he died the next day. Other occupants of the Pontiac also were treated for injuries at Hartford Hospital.
Hemingway, who was not injured, was taken into custody at the scene. Hemingway posted a $300,000 and was later released.
Police said the investigation is on-going and additional charges are expected.
Hemingway also was charged with driving with a suspended license; insufficient insurance; driving an unregistered motor vehicle; failure to obey traffic signal; reckless driving; assault in the second-degree with a motor vehicle; two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of third-degree assault.
Year-to-date, the city has had 5 fatal crashes, compared with 3 for the same period a year ago.
