OCEANSIDE, California, Aug. 9 -- The campaign of Mike Levin, a Democrat running for election in California's49th Congressional District, issued the following campaign news release:
Planned Parenthood Action Fund today endorsed Mike Levin for Congress in California's49th District.
In making their endorsement, Planned Parenthood Action Fund pointed out that when it comes to reproductive freedom, voters confront two candidates with dramatically opposing views.
"Voters face a stark choice in California's49th District this November. On one side, you have Diane Harkey, an unyielding opponent of a woman's right to reproductive freedom. As a politician, she has voted to block women from family planning programs and against requiring health insurance to cover birth control. In deep contrast, Mike Levin is a stalwart champion of women's health and reproductive rights. With Roe vs. Wade at stake under this Congress and administration, we need Mike Levin in Congress to protect our rights," said Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
"I stand with Planned Parenthood because I firmly believe that all women deserve access to quality reproductive health care," stated Mike Levin in response. "With the Supreme Court teetering on the brink of overturning Roe vs. Wade, I will do everything in my power to prevent the federal government from stripping away or eroding these vital rights."
Levin's opponent, Diane Harkey, holds views that are diametrically opposed. As a state legislator, Harkey voted against improving access to safe abortion (AB154, 2014) voted against allowing registered nurses to dispense contraceptives (AB2348, 2012) and against requiring health insurance companies to cover female contraceptives (SB1053, 2014).
Not surprisingly, Harkey received a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Rights Action League and the California Abortion Rights Action League.
The 49th District of California, representing southern Orange County and northern San Diego County, is one of the nation's most watched and competitive congressional races in the 2018 mid-term election.
