Patent Issued for Apparatuses, methods and systems for a video remote deposit capture platform (USPTO 11915310): United Services Automobile Association

Insurance Daily News

2024 MAR 14 (NewsRx) -- By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Insurance Daily News -- From Alexandria, Virginia, NewsRx journalists report that a patent by the inventors Prasad, Bharat (San Antonio, TX, US), Voutour, Teddy (Helotes, TX, US), filed on June 16, 2021, was published online on February 27, 2024.

The patent’s assignee for patent number 11915310 is United Services Automobile Association (San Antonio, Texas, United States).

News editors obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Negotiable instruments such as checks, money orders, banknotes etc., have been widely used to replace cash payments. For example, a payee may receive paychecks as salary payment from his or her employer. In order to obtain the payment amount, the payee may need to deposit the check in an account at the payee’s bank, and have the bank process the check. In some cases, the payee may take the paper check to a branch of the payee’s bank, and cash the check at the bank counter. Once the check is approved and all appropriate accounts involved have been credited, the check may be stamped with some kind of cancellation mark by a bank clerk, such as a “paid” stamp.

“The leading number of each reference number within the drawings indicates the figure in which that reference number is introduced and/or detailed. As such, a detailed discussion of reference number 101 would be found and/or introduced in FIG. 1. Reference number 201 is introduced in FIG. 2, etc.”

As a supplement to the background information on this patent, NewsRx correspondents also obtained the inventors’ summary information for this patent: “This patent application disclosure document (hereinafter “description” and/or “descriptions”) describes inventive aspects directed at various novel innovations (hereinafter “innovation,” “innovations,” and/or “innovation(s)”) and contains material that is subject to copyright, mask work, and/or other intellectual property protection. The respective owners of such intellectual property have no objection to the facsimile reproduction of the patent disclosure document by anyone as it appears in published Patent Office file/records, but otherwise reserve all rights.

“Introduction

“The RDC-Video provides a platform that allows a user to deposit a check by taking an image of the check and electronically transmitting the image to the user’s bank. For example, in one embodiment, the user may operate a smart phone (e.g., an Apple iPhone, etc.) to initiate the remote deposit, wherein the smart phone may automatically download and instantiate a remote deposit software component, which controls the smart phone to capture via its built-in camera, process and send the image of the check. For another example, the user may perform remote deposit by downloading and instantiating the remote deposit software component on their home computer connected to a standard home-use or office-use scanner/photocopier/fax machine. In one embodiment, the user’s bank may receive and process the image of the check to obtain deposit information (e.g., via optical character recognition, etc.), and complete the requested deposit based on the deposit information.

“The various embodiments described herein may be electronically performed by different entities such as, but not limited to a bank server, a user device, a third party agent, and/or the like. Those embodiments may also be performed by other entities.”

The claims supplied by the inventors are:

“1. A system comprising: a memory; and a processor in communication with the memory configured to: process an image of a financial instrument associated with a depositor to obtain a plurality of sample edge points of the financial instrument; process the plurality of sample edge points to project a plurality of vertical and horizontal sample edge lines of the financial instrument and to identify an outer edge of the financial instrument based on the plurality of vertical and horizontal sample edge lines; crop the image of the financial instrument based in part on the identified outer edge to create a rectangular financial instrument image; and transmit the rectangular financial instrument image to a remote financial institution server to deposit funds into an account associated with the depositor.

“2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to: determine whether the image of the financial instrument is a color image; and based on a determination that the image of the financial instrument is the color image, convert the image of the financial instrument into a grayscale image of the financial instrument.

“3. The system of claim 2, wherein the processor is further configured to: divide the grayscale image of the financial instrument into a plurality of sub-tiles; determine a grayscale threshold for each of the plurality of sub-tiles; generate a plurality of quantumized sub-tiles by applying the determined grayscale threshold to each of the plurality of sub-tiles; and recombine the plurality of quantumized sub-tiles to form a quantumized image of the financial instrument.

“4. The system of claim 3, wherein the processor is further configured to: generate a virtual image of the financial instrument by applying a convolution filter to the quantumized image.

“5. The system of claim 4, wherein the convolution filter is either a dilation filter or a sharpening filter.

“6. The system of claim 1, wherein the image of the financial instrument is captured at a mobile device.

“7. The system of claim 1, wherein the image of the financial instrument is captured at an ATM machine.

“8. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to transmit the rectangular financial instrument image to the remote financial institution server via mobile MMS.

“9. The system of claim 8, wherein a MMS body including the toe rectangular financial instrument image additionally comprises a personal identifying pin.

“10. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to transmit the rectangular financial instrument image to the remote financial institution server as part of a video.

“11. The system of claim 10, wherein the video is part of a live video stream.

“12. A method comprising: processing an image of a financial instrument associated with a depositor to obtain a plurality of sample edge points of the financial instrument; processing the plurality of sample edge points to project a plurality of vertical and horizontal sample edge lines of the financial instrument and to identify an outer edge of the financial instrument based on the plurality of vertical and horizontal sample edge lines; cropping the image of the financial instrument based in part on the identified outer edge to create a rectangular financial instrument image; and transmitting the rectangular financial instrument image to a remote financial institution server to deposit funds into an account associated with the depositor.

“13. The method of claim 12, further comprising: determining whether the image of the financial instrument is a color image; and based on a determination that the image of the financial instrument is the color image, converting the image of the financial instrument into a grayscale image of the financial instrument.

“14. The method of claim 13, further comprising: dividing the grayscale image of the financial instrument into a plurality of sub-tiles; determining a grayscale threshold for each of the plurality of sub-tiles; generating a plurality of quantumized sub-tiles by applying the determined grayscale threshold to each of the plurality of sub-tiles; and recombining the plurality of quantumized sub-tiles to form a quantumized image of the financial instrument.

“15. The method of claim 12, wherein the image of the financial instrument is captured at a mobile device.

“16. The method of claim 12, wherein the image of the financial instrument is captured at an ATM machine.

“17. The method of claim 12, wherein the rectangular financial instrument image is transmitted to the remote financial institution server via mobile MMS.

“18. The method of claim 17, wherein a MMS body including the toe rectangular financial instrument image additionally comprises a personal identifying pin.

“19. The method of claim 12, wherein the rectangular financial instrument image is transmitted to the remote financial institution server as part of a video.

“20. The method of claim 19, wherein the video is part of a live video stream.”
