Opinion: Add shopping for health insurance to the holiday to-do list

People all across Oklahoma are making lists and checking them twice. But a focus for many people right now should also be shopping for critical health insurance coverage.

The open enrollment period for people who don't receive health insurance through an employer, Medicare or Medicaid continues until Jan. 15. Those seeking coverage for themselves and their families starting Jan. 1 need to make a selection by Dec. 15.

Health insurance is vitally important to give people peace of mind and offer protection against the unexpected. It helps improve health outcomes by providing access to preventive services and condition management. That help is needed, as outlined by The Commonwealth Fund, which in 2023 ranked Oklahoma 44th among all states for health outcomes and healthy behaviors.

The good news is that overall, more Oklahomans than ever are receiving the benefits provided through health insurance, no matter how they get their coverage. Between 2023 and 2024, the number of people in Oklahoma who selected or automatically reenrolled in plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace leaped more than 36%, according to data analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Enhanced premium tax credits were likely a contributing factor.

The state's expansion of Medicaid in 2021 was also critical to expanding access to health care and decreasing the number of uninsured residents.

However, more than 11% of Oklahomans remain uninsured.

Those who aren't provided coverage elsewhere shouldn't miss this critical window to purchase an individual or family plan. Put in the time to compare plan offerings, including whether your current doctors are in network and whether your prescription medications are covered.

It's worth it. You'll be giving yourself the most important gift of all — access to a healthier future.
