Capital (Annapolis, MD)

LONDON - Powerful winds battered parts of northern Europe on Thursday, disrupting transportation and killing a woman who was hit by flying debris in central England. In the Netherlands, the landing gear on a small passenger plane collapsed as it landed in heavy winds at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Britain's West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman suffered serious head injuries in Wolverhampton, 140 miles northwest of London.

Rain, snow and strong winds of more than 90 mph from a weather system dubbed Storm Doris closed U.K. roads, canceled flights and for a time halted train travel to and from Euston Station, one of London's main terminals.

Heathrow Airport said about one in 10 flights was canceled.

An Icelandair flight from Reykjavik declared an in-flight fuel emergency after aborted attempts to land at both Manchester and Liverpool airports in northwest England. It eventually landed successfully in Manchester.

The Amsterdam flight also landed safely. Nobody was injured in the heavy landing at Schiphol Airport. Video shown on Dutch news sites showed the right landing gear of the twin-prop airplane operated by Flybe collapsing as it touched down.

Schiphol said in a statement that 59 people were on the plane.

Flybe confirmed "an incident" at Schiphol involving flight BE1284 from Edinburgh to Amsterdam.

"We can confirm that there are no injuries and all passengers have been bused to the airport terminal," the carrier said in a statement.

The landing came as powerful winds battered the Netherlands, causing traffic chaos and blowing roofs off some buildings but no other major incidents.

Sewage inundates San Jose homes after floods, evacuation

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Some residents returned home to sort through waterlogged furniture, toys and clothing after being abruptly evacuated when a surging creek carrying engine fuel and sewage water inundated thousands of homes in San Jose.

With water levels from Coyote Creek receding Thursday, officials said some of the 14,000 evacuated residents would be allowed to return home, although an evacuation order remained for parts of the city. Authorities warned residents to be careful about hygiene and handling food that may have come into contact with flood water.

"The water is not safe," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said. "There is contamination in this water and the contamination runs the gamut."

Residents waded through inundated streets to get to their homes.

Witnesses: Man kills 1 after yelling, 'Get out of my country'

OLATHE, Kan. - A man opened fire at a crowded Kansas bar, killing one man and wounding two others before he was arrested in Missouri, police said Thursday about an attack that some witnesses suggested had racial overtones.

Adam Purinton, 51, of Olathe, was charged with murder after the shooting Wednesday evening at Austins Bar and Grill in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe. He was expected to be returned to Kansas, said Maj. Rob Hills of the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

Citing witnesses, the Kansas City Star reported the suspect uttered racial slurs and yelled "get out of my country" before he opened fire.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla died at an area hospital and Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot were hospitalized.

Boy, 6, killed when vehicle crashes into dentist's office

MIDFIELD, Ala. - Authorities say a 6-year-old boy was killed in the lobby of a dentist's office when an SUV smashed through the window.

Al.com reported that the crash happened Thursday at Vital Smiles in a Birmingham suburb. "Something as simple, as innocent, as going to the dentist office and all of the sudden a car comes crashing through the building,"' Midfield Mayor Gary Richardson told the website. "There was no way to predict it or prevent it."

Fire Chief Larry Manning said the driver was trying to park and was struggling with the gearshift when the vehicle went through the window.

Authorities said the kindergartner was pinned beneath the SUV and others were injured. Manning told WBRC-TV that six people were taken to a hospital.

Israel reinstates life sentence of Hamas member

RAMALLAH, West Bank - An Israeli court has ordered a senior Hamas member to complete his life sentence after the man was freed in a 2011 swap of hundreds of inmates for an Israeli soldier held by Hamas, a Palestinian activist said Thursday.

At the time of the exchange, Nael Barghouti had served 33 years for participating in the kidnapping and killing of an Israeli soldier, making him one of the longest-held Palestinians.

Israel has since rearrested scores of Palestinians for allegedly resuming anti-Israel activities.

One roundup came after three Israeli teens were killed by a Hamas cell in 2014.

Barghouti, arrested in that sweep, subsequently served 30 months for Hamas membership.

Barghouti completed the sentence but was never released.

S.C. Democrat exiting DNC race, supports ex-Labor chief

ATLANTA - South Carolina Democratic Party chair Jaime Harrison is exiting the race for Democratic National Committee chairman and throwing his support to Tom Perez, solidifying the former Labor Secretary's place as the front-runner in a still-volatile contest.

Harrison said he lacked support to secure the 224 votes needed to capture the chairmanship. Party leaders will vote on the final day of the three-day meeting that began Thursday in Atlanta.

"We have a candidate for DNC chair who can unite the Democratic Party behind the goal of enacting progressive change, a candidate who can take the fight to Donald Trump and rebuild our party infrastructure, and a candidate whom I, as a voting member of the DNC, am proud to support: Tom Perez," he said in a statement.

VW scandal: A Volkswagen executive arrested in the U.S. appeared in Detroit federal court on charges related to the company's emissions scandal. A not-guilty plea was entered on Oliver Schmidt's behalf. He's charged in Volkswagen's scheme to sell diesel vehicles that didn't meet U.S. pollution standards.

Inmate death: An autopsy is scheduled for Friday on the body of a 23-year-old man who died in the new New Orleans jail - the fourth inmate death at the facility since it opened in September. Colby Crawford was pronounced dead Wednesday after his cellmate found him unresponsive, authorities said.
