Nine businesses compete in Winona's 6th annual Grocery Grab, donate 1,172 pounds to food shelf [Winona Daily News, Minn.]

Winona Daily News (MN)

Feb. 29—WNB Financial's sixth annual Grocery Grab brought together nine businesses Wednesday evening to compete for the golden cart traveling trophy and to support the Winona Volunteer Services food shelf.

Excel Images, Farmers Insurance, Fastenal Industrial Services, HBC, Saint Mary's University Athletics, Sugar Loaf Senior Living, Winona Daily News, Winona Health and WNB Financial competed against each other at Midtown Foods to see which team could gather the most expensive groceries within 90 seconds.

Each business formed a team of two people, one who raced through the store holding onto two carts as the other threw products into the carts as fast as possible.

At the end of the 90 seconds, each business paid for the groceries and the items were then brought to the food shelf to be given to those in need.

HBC took the win Wednesday with a record-breaking $908.55 worth of groceries.

As one of the prizes for winning, WNB Financial reimbursed HBC for the groceries that team collected and purchased.

Winona Volunteer Services executive director Sandra Burke presented the HBC team members Matt Marek and Trey Richardson with the golden cart traveling trophy.

The top three businesses in the contest also included Farmers Insurance in second place with $669.50 and Saint Mary's University Athletics in third place with $627.03.

Overall, the nine businesses spent more than $4,700 on food and personal items to stock the food shelf.

The items totaled 1,172 pounds.

Since the start of the local Grocery Grab in 2018, businesses have collected 7,355 pounds of donations for the food shelf and spent $26,000 at Midtown Foods.

The Grocery Grab kicked off the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign, where groups and individuals throughout the state support 300 partner food drives.
